“Torch of Freedom” awarded to deserving artist Aretha Franklin.
The acknowledged Queen of Soul visited New York this weekend to be presented with the prestigious award - the “Torch of Freedom”.This accolade is awarded by the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’, Coast Guard and Airmen’s Club of NYC whose motto is “service to those who have served their country”.
Franklin who was presented the award on Sunday afternoon also performed as the headliner of the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’, Coast Guard and Airmen’s Club benefit concert.
The armed forces spent Sunday paying tribute to the troops and recognizing those who devoted their lives to heroic achievement, giving of themselves selflessly.

There’s lots of press about how Aretha missed the actual ceremony at which she was to be presented with the award. But so far no reason has been given by her or her publicist at to what happened? She did arrive later to perform - so was it a simple misunderstanding? Was she unwell? We just don’t know? At 66, perhaps she has a health issue?
Let’s all hope Aretha Franklin is fine and well. After all, she’s also due to perform at the inauguration ceremony for Barack Obama in 2009! Long live the Queen of Soul!
