World Music Awards won by Leona Lewis and Alicia Keys
Monaco dazzled on Sunday with the glamorous winnings of Coldplay, Leona Lewis and Alicia Keys at the World Music Awards ( the WMAs) this Sunday.
British super band Coldplay took home the award for world’s top selling act of 2008. A well deserved success after their latest effort “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends,” released in mid 2008 was a hit across the globe, topping the charts in Japan, Britain, the US , Germany and France.
Although the band were not able to be there to accept their prestigious award, they were also named the World Music Awards’ rock act of the year. Kid Rock and Beyonce also performed at the WMAs , an awards ceremony that credits artists for their sales figures worldwide. Figures that are reported by IFPI a body that represents the entire industry and adheres to its strict standards.
British sensation Leona Lewis surpassed the efforts of legends Mariah Carey and Madonna this year and was awarded the female pop act accolade while the male one was given out to Kid Rock who’s album “Rock N Roll Jesus” was an international hit.
Amy Winehouse was awarded female pop/rock act of the year. The singer who’s battles with addiction have been widely publicized has clearly not let it stop her in her steady climb to legendary status. The male pop/rock act of the year also went to Kid Rock.
Leona Lewis proudly accepted the new artist award while Alicia Keys took home the award for world’s best R&B.
Among the other winners of the night were Lil Wayne of the US who won World’s best hip-hop/rap artist , Senagalese Akon who was named greatest Internet artist of 2008 and L.A. Reid who was awarded a tribute for outstanding contributions to the musical arena.
