So Michael Jackson has just announced that he will be doing a staggering 30 odd dates at the O2 in London, England and this will be his farewell tour. So is Michael still the King of Pop?

Having sold well over 750 MILLON records/CDs worldwide; no other artists alive or past away has even come close. And with the decline of record/CD sales in the 21st century I very much doubt whether that record will ever be broken.

Michael Jackson has gone through a whole lot of turmoil on a personal, financial and even musical level as his last “Invincible” album failed to live up to the high standards he has set himself.

So my question is this – Can Michael Jackson still be called the “King Of Popular Music?”

There is no doubt that he is still the king of pop, but this might just be his last tour. I hope not, though…

  2. Madelene Richards on March 13th, 2009 7:17 am

30 dates in london! He has gone ballistic after all! Those are a lot of dates. Maybe he is going to retire for good this time (if he can save any money)

  3. Bobby O' Leary on March 13th, 2009 7:21 am

MJ - king of pop? I think hes more like the king of popsicle sucking children… hehe - just kidding! i guess he would still qualify as the king of pop what with the 750 million records hes sold and all……

  4. Jim Handle on March 13th, 2009 7:28 am

I still like his music - its evergreen. He is the king of pop for me! I don’t know about you’ll.

  5. Rita Schwazman on March 13th, 2009 7:32 am

Well, Jim, you do make a point. He does have the most sales ever. And I mean ever! Still, what a fall from grace!

  6. Tom Falter on March 16th, 2009 3:15 pm

I heard that he is going to do 50 shows. If his shows get sold out, that means he is the king after all. Let us see how they do…

  7. Madelene Richards on March 16th, 2009 3:17 pm

Yes, the success of the shows will probably determine if he is still the best and commands a fan following or not.

  8. Bobby O' Leary on March 16th, 2009 3:20 pm

I just read that his dates have all sold out in a few hours for all 50 shows! Unbelievable, the man is a legend! Still the king for me….

  9. Rita Schwazman on March 17th, 2009 7:28 am

I heard hes getting Ne yo along with many more acts. These shows will be simply awesome!

  10. Jim Handle on March 17th, 2009 7:41 am

Yes, and now even Will.I.Am might be making an appearance. I think this is cool - unbelievably cool!

  11. Evie Knightley on March 17th, 2009 8:21 am

MJ is something all right. He goes bankrupt and decides to do a 50 concert gig in london which has his biggest fan base. Hmmmmm ….

  12. Rick on March 17th, 2009 10:55 pm

undeniably he’s still the best and the only King of Pop.. no matter if it’ll be his last, but he’ll always be number one for me and i think everyone will agree. :)

  13. Chris on March 17th, 2009 11:34 pm

so sad to know that he’s making his farewell now. we’ll surely missed him, he’ll always be remembered, the only King of Pop Music. his songs will be treasured down to the last generation, no matter he’ll taking it off but in our hearts he’ll always be the number one.

  14. Timothy on March 18th, 2009 5:18 pm

Mike’s the dude. He comes up with something so spectacular you want to be there for his shows. That’s MJ for you!

  15. Thomas Callum on March 18th, 2009 5:21 pm

Yes, he’s quite the crowd puller. And sold out already before we could say ‘MJ’!

  16. Hannah Richards on March 18th, 2009 5:23 pm

Surely the king of pop, and perhaps of all time. It will be tough to beat it or be as bad as he was!

  17. Julia on March 19th, 2009 2:18 pm

Only Michael can have the kind of charisma it takes to sell out so many concerts so fast. I think he is still the king of pop if he can do that!

  18. allenhooper on March 19th, 2009 2:20 pm

Well, to be honest, I feel that MJ needs to retire soon before he does something else to tarnish his own image. This comeback is a chance for him to end on a great note both musically and financially… but yup, hes the king all right.

  19. wisegirl28 on March 19th, 2009 2:24 pm

Michael Jackson is the king of pop and always will be. Yes, he has made many mistakes along the way, but so have many other famous singers. Everyone should be allowed a second chance (or in his case 5th chance) to improve who they are and rise up again.

  20. Mr_Know_It_All on March 20th, 2009 12:06 pm

Err….I think he’s scheduled for over 50 dates at the O2 now and if I’m not mistaken tickets are all sold out and are exchanging hands on the blackmarket for up to £2,000 a pop!

  21. Aaron on March 20th, 2009 2:44 pm

Already been black marketed?!? Man, this is bad news for people like me who wanted to catch him in London this time round. Looks like its his last time. He is always going to be the king for me.

  22. Bhav on March 20th, 2009 2:46 pm

I had no idea MJ was this popular despite being out of circulation for so long! Yes, he is the king, but this kind of craze is ridiculous. Perhaps this is his last set.

  23. robbieevans on March 20th, 2009 2:51 pm

Michael is the king but it is good to see an artist his age command this kind of interest and respect. He is truly the best pop star we have seen.

  24. lisawilly on March 20th, 2009 2:55 pm

Yes, hi is the king, but for how long? This outing proves that he is in demand but he is getting older. Plus he has his own set of eccentricities. Lets see how long this fever lasts.

  25. robbieevans on March 20th, 2009 2:56 pm

i agree. He may be the top gun but he is not likely to be able to generate this kind of interest forever. It is simply not possible to sustain. This mania is only because he is doing shows after a very long time.

  26. bobrocks1 on March 23rd, 2009 3:28 pm

MJ is the dude! after all this time, he still manages to hold the crowds. This is crazy hype we are seeing in the media every day. He is the king all right!

  27. rickgeary on March 23rd, 2009 3:30 pm

Michael is the king of pop ever since he started singing with the Jackson 5. Doesn’t matter how old he is. He will always be the king of pop.

  28. bobrocks1 on March 23rd, 2009 3:37 pm

For him to command this kind of respect, he is indeed still at the top. The king has not yet been dethroned though there have been many other contenders, none has managed to last as long or come close to his record. The king’s reign continues….

  29. Fatima Hussain on March 24th, 2009 5:14 pm

Michael is indeed making news everywhere. His thriller has apparently made new records…. this guy is always going to be the king!

  30. Evie Knightley on March 24th, 2009 5:15 pm

I don’t know what all the fuss is about - his music was good but not anymore. He has not come out with new music for a long time so what has he done to deserve the title of king forever!?!

  31. Madelene Richards on March 30th, 2009 6:41 am

Yes definitely. Jackson is still the king and he will be ever the “King of Pop”. A mere financial crisis for the failure of a single album cannot smash the career and above all the popularity of such a star. Even though he bids farewell, then also he will be ruling as the “King of Pop”

  32. Bobby O' Leary on March 30th, 2009 6:51 am

Michael is still the “King of Pop”. He will be for coming few decades surely. But is it possible for him to rule the pop arena ever? Definitely not. Let’s see, how long can he rule.

  33. Evie Knightley on March 31st, 2009 2:42 am

Michael is just fabulous. I always find him the king. And a man with such huge records cannot be lost from the limelight of music even though he bids farewell. However I think he will be the king of Pop forever.

  34. Fatima Hussain on March 31st, 2009 2:59 am

Jackson is no doubt the King of Pop. None have any doubts regarding this fact. But I think he is king because he is still ruling and nothing is permanent. He is not going to rule the pop throughout his life. It’ so natural that his records will be broken in future

  35. Thomas Callum on April 1st, 2009 1:08 am

This might just be his last tour. If this is the last one he will be disappearing from the pop scenario after this tour . Will it be possible for him to hold the same position after he retires? Let’s see what happens

  36. Hannah Richards on April 1st, 2009 2:04 am

Some are born to be king. And Michael is one of them. He will rule always, no matter if it is his farewell tour. I do not think that anyone in future can be able to beat Jackson.

  37. Julia on April 2nd, 2009 1:10 am

Micheal is King. However, becoming a king is not easy. It took years for him to get this position and I do not think he will lose his place so easily. I believe that he will rule for long although not for ever. I adore yhim as the “KING OF POP”?

  38. wisegirl28 on April 2nd, 2009 3:14 am

I agree with Julia, that MJ will be the king for long. But can we say for sure that MJ will rule the pop world ever? There will be nobody to beat him out? No! Nowadays, the upcoming pop stars are making great jobs. Is it very unnatural for any of them to beat out MJ’s so far recordsin future?

  39. Aaron on April 3rd, 2009 2:59 am

Michael is just awesome! He is king, he will remain the king. His is a magic voice. It touches the soul of the listener. How can such a man lose his place? No, I don’t think that there will be anyone to beat out Michael from the pedestal of the King.

  40. Bhav on April 3rd, 2009 3:18 am

None can ignore that Michael is King of Pop. But none can be in same place forever. And if in future any pop artist beat him, it will be of no wonders.

  41. Madelene Richards on April 6th, 2009 9:24 am

Its not easy for an upcoming pop star to snatch Michaels place all on a sudden. Michael has fought hard to make his current status and he is king. he won’t lose his place so easily

  42. Bobby O' Leary on April 6th, 2009 9:25 am

Michael is still the king but how long? He has to retire from the stage one day and at that time its no wonder if some prospective star comes up to take his place.

  43. Jim Handle on April 7th, 2009 3:08 am

The record Jackson has achieved so far is what none of the artist past or alive can even come close to. the London tour can be a farewell tour of Jackson, but Micheal won’t disappear from the music scenario ever although he is not present in person. In that sense he will be ever ruling the pop scenario.

  44. Fatima Hussain on April 7th, 2009 3:26 am

None can deny that Michael is a great singer. He is the soul of Pop. He rules the entire pop world. But he can’t be the king ever right? Since nothing his permanent on this world , Michael cannot be the king for ever. I think the upcoming stars performing well is able enough to break so far records of Michael although not very easily.

  45. Lisa on April 7th, 2009 10:35 am

Hey Michael is King. he is going to rule the Pop world ever. I don’t think that after the farewell trip this iconic star will be disappeared from the scene. Music freaks won’t ever come out of the effect of Jackson fever.

  46. Timothy on April 8th, 2009 12:19 am

I completely agree with Lisa. MJ is the icon of the Pop world. How can such a star lose his place? gaining such a place is not an easy job. Similarly he won’t lose it all on a suddejn . I believe that the King Of Pop can never be replaced and he will be the King in future also.

  47. Thomas Callum on April 8th, 2009 12:26 am

I respect the MJ fans like Timothy. Even I am a die-heart fan of MJ. But is it possible for anyone on this earth to hold the same place ever?? MJ is the king of pop now. may be even after his farewell Jackson fever will also be there in the pop world for several years. But I do not think he will be the King of the Pop music ever.

  48. allenhooper on April 9th, 2009 3:32 am

Michael is great man! there’s no way of losing his hard earned place. He is the king and he will be the king. Even his farewell won’t make him disappear from the heart of pop lovers anyway. I love him

  49. wisegirl28 on April 9th, 2009 3:34 am

Michael is no doubt a talented artist, a great , fantastic singer. It’s Michael who has kept the pop world rocking for so many years. How can a farewell tour make such a man disappear from a music scenario. I believe he is the king of Pop still and will be ever

  50. anniewil007 on April 9th, 2009 4:58 am

I don’t think that michael will be the kin g of Pop ever. A king can’t rule for ever right? MJ is a living legend. Probably he is the only one who has kept the pop world rocking. But after his farewell it won’t possible for him to hold the same place. may be some other may come up to hold his so far position.

  51. robbieevans on April 10th, 2009 6:23 am

Michael is still ruling the pop world due to his extraordinary talent. A talented artist like Michael is hard to find. In that sense it is difficult for a new star to come up and beat Michael’s records. I think Michael will be the King for ever.

  52. Aaron on April 10th, 2009 6:24 am

Don’t you think Michael is born to rule? How can a born king lose his acquired position within a blink of eye. His farewell won’t let him to disappear in obscurity from the heart of pop lovers. He is still the King and will rule ever I think

  53. Bhav on April 10th, 2009 6:32 am

It seems Aaron is obsessed of Micahel. I think he does not know that a king cannot rule for ever. Michael can be the ruler till the time he can rock the stage, but when he won’t be there, he won’t be able to make his effect on the fans.

  54. Bobby O' Leary on April 13th, 2009 4:14 am

I agree with Bhav. I also think when michael won’t be in the music world in person, he is bound to disappear from the people’s mind. i am not saying that his music won’t be there. His music is an asset to the pop world but it won’t be possible for him to hold his position ever and ever. I future someone can beat his records and it will be of no wonder.

  55. Madelene Richards on April 13th, 2009 5:16 am

Michael can’t be dethroned from his chair so easily. It’s not because I am a great fan of his, rather it is because Michael is undoubtedly a great singer. The place where he is now is heard earned, his music is just rocking. i believe he will be in his position for ever. He will ever be the “King Of Pop”

  56. Tom Falter on April 13th, 2009 5:27 am

Well, Michael is ruling the Pop world since years. It’s very much true that he can’t be take out of his position all on a sudden. however, if someone of his talent come up, he may take out MJ from his position. But will it completely wipe out his title “King of Pop”. After all he is a living legend

  57. Rita Schwazman on April 14th, 2009 1:23 am

Like me MJ is favorite to many people. The position where he is now beseated is hard earned no doubt, and like many I believe that it is not so easy to pull him out of his position. Although MJ won’t be there in the entertainment panorama forever, but will he disappear from the heart of the pop lovers ever?

  58. Jim Handle on April 14th, 2009 1:27 am

I agree with Rita that MJ will be in the heart of the music lovers ever. but that does not mean that any upcoming star won’t be able to break MJ’s hard earned record ever. I won’t be surprised if any star come up after beating the records of the King of Pop.

  59. Evie Knightley on April 14th, 2009 3:26 am

In a word MJ is a living legend. God gifted talent what Michael has achieved is very rare. Is it possible for an upcoming star to break Michael’s record so easily? I believe it’s just next to impossible.

  60. Hannah Richards on April 15th, 2009 8:09 am

No matter if it is a farewell tour of Michael. he will be living as the king ever in the heart of the pop lovers like me. I believe MJ is a king.

  61. Timothy on April 15th, 2009 8:11 am

MJ is a king till date. But is it possible for a single man to rule an entire world ever? MJ is the king of the entire pop world till date. talents like him i rare. I truly adore him, but I won’t be surprised if in future his record is broken.

  62. wisegirl28 on April 16th, 2009 6:50 am

the crown of MJ is not only hard earned, but also his talent is a rare thing available in the world. how can he lose that place he has nade already in people’s heart?

  63. anniewil007 on April 16th, 2009 6:52 am

MJ is a King, a “King of Pop”. he is the only man who keeps the essence of pop blooming in the people’s heart for ages. many has come and many will come but is it possible to wipe out Michael from the heart of pop lovers? What do you say?

  64. allenhooper on April 16th, 2009 6:54 am

MJ did not began his journey as a king right? But he in due course managed to achieve greatness of a king. may be a pop artist who is not in limelight now, one day will achieve greatness like michael. Who knows the future?

  65. robbieevans on April 17th, 2009 1:28 am

MJ is going to retire from the music world. its really heart breaking but how can such a talent can disappear from the pop world. He has established the pedestal of pop music atop which the future generation has extablished their foothold. MJ is a King

  66. Aaron on April 17th, 2009 1:31 am

Finally MJ is leaving. I stronly believe that MJ will never be compltely wipe out from the musicand entertainment arena even if his record is broken by some other artists. Anyways, everyone has to leave some day, but his essence will always be there. I love him.

  67. Bhav on April 17th, 2009 1:34 am

Michael so far is the King Of Pop. i don’t know why people are getting so sentimental regarding his farewell. it’s no wonder someday anyother star will come up to hold his place . A man cannot be the king for ever right? No doubt what Michael has given is uncountable and MJ is a popular name all through the world.

  68. Bobby O' Leary on April 20th, 2009 4:58 am

I think the name of Michael has been imprinted in the heart of music lovber as the “King Of Pop”. It is he who is the predecessor and the forerunner at the same time of the modern pop music. So how is it possible that MJ will disappear from the music scenario although if it is his farewell tour?

  69. Thomas Callum on April 22nd, 2009 11:02 am

Michael is still the king of Pop but some day he has to go ccording to the general law of nature. But yes , he will reign the pop lovers heart ever, even if some artist come up to occupy his place.

  70. Timothy on April 22nd, 2009 11:04 am

Only the failure of one album can’t bring the downfall of a so-far king’s record. MJ was king . He is King and will be ever because the talents like MJ is god gifted and is very rare. Even after his farewell he won’t disappear into oblivion

  71. Hannah Richards on April 22nd, 2009 11:06 am

Many like me are the die heart fans of MJ. But what do you say- is it impossible enough for a prospective star to occupy Michael’s place in future?

  72. allenhooper on April 23rd, 2009 9:28 am

Kings are born and never made. MJ is a king of this category- a born king. He will be the sovereign ruler of pop genre ever.

  73. robbieevans on April 24th, 2009 8:58 am

The record of MJ cannot be broken so easily. his place is in his fans’heart. So his farewell from the entertainment platform does’nt indicate his farewell from people’s heart

  74. Aaron on April 24th, 2009 9:06 am

MJ has to retire someday according to the natural law. Well, i don’t deny that he is the king but in future any talented star can come up and become the new king

  75. Tom Falter on April 27th, 2009 11:10 am

don’t you guys think that MJ is a born king and he alone holds the sovereignty of the pop world so long? yes it is MJ who has established the pedestal of Pop so firmly in the music industry and the future generation will have to follow his footsteps. so MJ will always be the king

  76. Bobby O' Leary on April 27th, 2009 11:13 am

can it be true that MJ will always be the king? No it can’t be. The so far king has already faced a flop with “invincible” and it is very natural that one day his place will be occupied by any upcoming young pop star.

  77. Fatima Hussain on April 28th, 2009 4:58 am

is it so unnatural if a star someday touch MJ’s record ? MJ is a star and he will be ever in his own way. That does not mean that none of the artist could come up to break his records and be the King.Well, let’s see what future has in store for the “king”

  78. Evie Knightley on April 28th, 2009 5:00 am

Even if MJ retires from the pop scenario, i do not think his fan following will disappear ever. He is a great and rare talent. Die heart fans of MJ like me will always respect him as the “king Of Pop”

  79. Hannah Richards on April 29th, 2009 12:07 pm

Mj is a great talent. i don’t think he will disappear from the pop scenario so early.Well let’s see what happens in future. I don’t be surprised if new pop star someday beat his records

  80. Sarah on April 29th, 2009 12:10 pm

don’t you think MJ has grown old. It’s the time for his retirement. I do not think that pop lovers till long to hear him. There are so many strs tody, who are coming in spotlight. I cannot think him a king any more

  81. Timothy on April 29th, 2009 12:19 pm

In a sentence “MJ is a living legend”. He is king, a emperor. People consider him as the God Of Pop. How can he disappear from the pop world so easily?????

  82. allenhooper on April 30th, 2009 9:34 am

Michael is a great talent. I don’t think he will disappear in obscurity as soon as a new star comes up. Well lets see what happens. But for me he is always the “KING OF POP”

  83. lisawilly on May 1st, 2009 2:19 am

to be very clear, the name of MJ as the “KING OF POP” won’t ever disapper from the music scenario. He was there, he is there and will be there for ever.

  84. Bobby O' Leary on May 4th, 2009 1:42 am

It’s time for MJ to retire from the stage. He has ruled for over a decade and he is the King really. But I don’t think his retirement or farewell will somehow affect his present statue “KING OF POP”

  85. Evie Knightley on May 5th, 2009 1:28 am

I don’t think that MJ will no longer be called the “KING OF POP” after his farewell tour. He is a born king and a rare talent of the Pop arena. May be in near future a highly talented star comes up but that does not mean that MJ will no longer be respected as the “KING OF POP”. His place is a single and integrated one.

  86. Timothy on May 6th, 2009 2:51 am

MJ has ruled the pop world for since decades and now it’s the time for he to retire. New artists are coming up and there are many who have already accomplished significant success. At any time , one of them would be called the King Of pop and MJ won’t be no longer in the scenario.

  87. allenhooper on May 7th, 2009 11:17 am

Don’t you think, that MJ has ruled fr long and now its hi time to leave the pop scenario. he will laways be known as King of Pop although, but it’s the time for a new star to come up.

  88. robbieevans on May 8th, 2009 9:58 am

Like many of his fans , I also think that MJ ca never be disappear from the pop scenario, no matter any upcoming star comes up and break his records. I love him and for me MJ is “KING OF THE POP”
