Bobby Womack is an American musician, songwriter and singer and is well known for his Soul blues, R&B soul, funk and deep soul music.

He was born on March 4, 1944 in Cleveland,Ohio and is an extremely great player on the piano and keyboards. He also plays the guitar and drums and has given excellent vocals. He has worked with labels like United Artist, Minit, The Right Stuff, Solar, MCA, Columbia, Castle and Indigo Records.

He is an active singer since 1962 and continues to surprise his fans with excellent music and numerous hits which he has given to the industry. He started his career as a lead singer in his family group The Valentinos.

Womack is also an excellent songwriter and has written numerous numbers “it’s All Over Now” and “I Can Understand It”. His biggest hits as a singer are “That’s the Way I Feel About Cha”, “Lookin’ For a Love” and “If You Think You’re Lonely Now” in 1980s.

He received much fame when he was nominated in 2009 into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was the third boy to Naomi Womack and Friendly Sr.

Bobby formed a group The Womack Brothers with his brothers Curtis, Harry, Cecil and Friendly Jr. after which they began touring for their gospel singing. Soon the group signed with SAR records and left gospel singing for soul. The group gave the hit single “Lookin’ For a Love” which rocked the charts with No 8 on R&B. The group came with “It’ All Over Now” in 1964 which again was a big hit. They changed the name of the group to Valentinos after signing with SAR records.

Womack started his solo career when he signed with Minit Records and gave the hit “What Is This” which was followed by other hits like “More than I Can Stand”, “Fly Me to the Moon” and “California Dreamin”. These singles paved way for success for Bobby.

Womack moved to United Artists label in 1971 and gave the hit “That the Was I Feel About You” from the album “Communication” which went on to be Top 40 single.

Bobby reached the top of pop when he gave remake of his “Lookin’ for a Love” and it reached Top Ten on pop singles chart. After 1976, Bobby faced lot of problems even when his singles were doing well.

He left United Artist in 1976 and went out of R&B top group with fans.
Bobby continued to give several hit singles and albums and his final hit album was “Facts of Life. I Don’t Know What the World Is Coming To” in 2004.

In 2008, Bobby’s “daylight” was recorded by Kelly Rowland in her own version of R&B hit and it became a hit in the UK as bobby did not release it earlier.

His hit singles include “Lookin’ For a Love” in 1962 which was R&B No 8, “It’s All Over Now” in 1964 which was R&B No 94, “California Dreamin” in 1968 which was US No 43 and R&B No 20, “Fly Me To The Moon” in 1968, “What Is This” in 1968, “How I Miss My Baby” in 1969, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” in 1969, “It’s Gonna Rain” in 1969, “More Than I Can Understand” in 1970 to name a few.
Bobby Womack has given many hit albums and is still quite popular among the soul purists.
The singer is highly acclaimed and he is well known for his masterpieces of music and vocals.

    I didn’t know until after reading this article that he wrote and sang many of the tunes I’ve loved listening to all these years. He deserves much credit for taking soul music to the next level. “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and “Fly Me To The Moon” are songs that bear a lot of sentiment for me and my generation.

    Is it true that Bobby Womack gave the Stones their first big hit with It’s All Over Now? Looking at the list of his achievements, shouldn’t he already be in the Rock Hall of Fame? Or it could only be a matter of time.
